Multiconductor cable

In the electronics industry and computer field, it is necessary to utilize multiple lines or busses interconnecting several different elements on the same line as related equipment. The development of new electrical cables in which a large number of wires are encapsulated in a flat insulating web has produced significant advantages in computers, telecommunication devices, and the electronic industry generally. Multiconductor flat insulated cable is used throughout the electronics industry for ease of termination, space requirements and economy. Multiconductor cables containing hundreds or even thousands of very small conductors or coaxial conductor pairs are utilized to interconnect separate portions of complex electronic circuits. Ordinarily, the conductors of such a cable are disposed in coplanar side-by-side relation with center spacings of 0.05 inches (1.27 mm). A multi-conductor cable is generally composed of a core of a plurality of insulated conductors, a sheath surrounding the core, and a filler occupying the interstices within the core and between the sheath and the core. The filler serves to provide circular cross section of the cable and prevent the deformation of the cable and to improve the tensile strength of the cable. Ribbon cable is a type of cable which has a plurality of conductors positioned adjacent each other in a single plane. Typically, the conductors are encased in a flexible insulating material, such as vinyl, which follows the contours of the parallel closely spaced conductors in the ribbon cable. Typically an electrical connector is coupled to the end of the cable to form a cable termination assembly which facilitates connecting conductors of the cable to other cables, terminal boards, modular equipment used in computers, etc. Multi-conductor flat cable connectors have a plurality of contacts which are configured to contact the conductors within the ribbon cable and also to provide a pin connection to a matching connector or pin array.
