Gender changer

A gender changer is a coupling device that permits two connectors of the same gender (male connectors or two female connectors) to be joined together. The means used to carry the data may be one wire or a bundle of wires commonly referred to as a cable between the devices. A connector on each end of the cable is a convenient means to attach the cable to the device. In personal computers, there are serial input/output (I/O) ports and parallel I/O ports that are provided for communication with peripheral devices. A serial (I/O) port sends and receives one data bit at a time in serial format over a single data line in a single cable. A serial port is used primarily for modems, serial printers, plotters and mice. A parallel input/output (I/O) port sends and receives eight data bits in parallel format over eight lines in a single cable simultaneously. The Small Computer System Interface (SCSI) bus is an industry-standard and ANSI-standard specification for electrical busses used for computers and their peripheral devices. A SCSI bus is normally used for communications between computers and peripheral devices, among multiple peripheral devices, and among multiple computers. Various circuits are known for providing power from a computer to an external peripheral. These circuits typically deliver power from a port in the computer. They also deliver power over one of the control lines in the circuits. The computer industry has standardized the various types of connectors. A gender changer allows a user to connect a modem or computer peripheral to either the parallel or serial port.
