Cable assembly
Cable assemblies are commonly employed in industrial and telecommunications operations to transmit electrical power and/or signals between two devices. Many electrical systems require cables to be attached to electronic or electrical components within a casing or housing containing the components and then emerge from an opening in the housing. Such cables can carry electrical signals from electrical circuits in one housing to circuits in another housing. A cable assembly typically includes a cable and two cable end connectors respectively connected to ends of the cable. The cable can be a coaxial cable, a flat cable or a multi-conductor cable, any of which electrically connects to electrical terminals of the cable end connectors by any of several commonly used connecting technologies. To facilitate connection of the cable to the equipment, connectors are typically assembled at the ends of the cable. The connector has electrical contacts with solder tails adapted for connection with insulated, signal transmitting conductors of the cable. The electrical contacts in the known connector are springs engaged against the signal transmitting conductors with spring forces. For a cable assembly without signal conditioning circuit elements, the electrical contacts connect directly to respective cable conductors. For a cable assembly with signal conditioning circuit elements, such as resistors, capacitors and inductors, the circuit elements are mounted in the housing, and are connected with electrical contacts in the housing. A cable assembly usually includes a flat flexible cable having a plurality of generally parallel conductors with insulation disposed around and between the respective conductors. Electrical connectors are terminated to one or both ends of the flat flexible cable to form a cable assembly. With the popularization of portable electronic devices such as notebook computers, a cable assembly used to transmit signals in such devices is required to have a minimized cable diameter as well as a low profile configuration for at least one of the cable end connectors. That way, the cable assembly does not occupy too much space within the portable device. A metallic shielding is commonly required to be attached to the cable assembly, in order to prevent EMI (Electro Magnetic Interference) in relation to the external environment. The metallic shielding is often called an EMI shield.
