Computer microphone

Since multimedia computers become a popular trend in the computer development, many computer peripheral devices are developed. Other than a mouse which becomes a necessary device of a computer, for a multimedia computer with audio and video functions, many computer peripheral devices including a speaker, a printer, a scanner, a digital camera, etc., are more and more important. With the burgeoning importance of computer audio applications such as speech recognition and dictation, Internet telephones, computer telephony and video conferencing, the use of microphones in connection with personal computers has increased in popularity due to the advent of inexpensive multimedia computers and sophisticated applications like collaboration on the Internet, telephony and speech recognition. A personal computer (PC) system typically includes a sound card that is connected to the data bus on a motherboard of the PC. Most sound cards include microphone and line level ports for input of analog audio signals and process audio data for output to external speakers. Often in a computer system, a loudspeaker and microphone are turned on for various modes of a computer system such as a speakerphone mode or non-speakerphone audio modes. Microphones are often attached to headsets. Headset microphones are often preferred over stationary microphones because use of a headset allows for greater degree of movement. A headset microphone allows the speaker to move about with relative freedom. Microphones in portable computers have been selected based on the general directivity associated with the microphone. Microphones used in portable computers can be omni-directional microphones, cardioid microphones, or supercardioid microphones.
