The popularity of portable sound systems, such as portable CD players and portable MP3 players, connected to headphones, has reached an ever expanding market. Portable stereo systems used in connection with headphones have been used by runners and joggers as well as by walkers and people traveling in vehicles and flying in airplanes. One of the problems encountered in the wide usage of such headphone stereo systems is that the movement of a headphone user is limited to the length of the cable connecting the headphone to a conventional receiver/amplifier. This limitation restricts the user's freedom of movement, endangers his safety as he may trip on the cable, and electrically limits the distance he may be from the receiver/amplifier. An emerging technology allows headphones to wirelessly receive an audio signal from an audio signal source without a wire-line connection to the audio signal source. This allows the user to move around freely within a range of the audio signal source and still enjoy the audio programming being provided through the headphones. In a wireless audio system, a high-frequency transmitter is installed in the main unit of the audio system for audio output wirelessly, and a high-frequency receiver is installed in the headphone or speaker system of the audio system to receive radio output signal from the high-frequency transmitter at the main unit. The audio signal produced by one of these devices and processed by the audio receiver/amplifier is wirelessly transmitted to the audio headphones by way of the base unit coupled to the audio receiver/amplifier. High frequency carrier waves are employed wherein the audio information is modulated upon the high frequency carrier wave, transmitted by an antenna coupled to the base unit, received by a wireless headphones, subsequently demodulated and thereafter converted to an audio signal which is reproducible by the wireless headphones.
