Portable electronics provide people with more freedom while enjoying various mordern digital technologies. The demand for the mobile access to computing and communications services is mounting. In response to consumer demand, a wide variety of portable and heandheld electronic devices, such as notebook computers, mobile phones, personal digital assistants, portable radios, portable compact disc (CD) players, and MP3 players, global positioning system (GPS) receivers, have become commercially available. An MP3 player is much easier to use for music listening. There are numerous designs and styles of portable CD systems and portable DVD players that are commercially available under a wide variety of brand names. A personal digital assistant (PDA) has recently become a popular portable electronic device. A personal digital assistant provides personal and multimedia services which incorporate recent data communication technology. The PDA enables a user to easily access a small and portable terminal using a pen or voice and provides a graphic user interface (GUI) environment. An electronic dictionary uses a dictionary memory which stores vocabulary data representative of a multiplicity of vocabulary entries and provides information concerning spelling, grammar and pronunciation.

Digital voice recorders are used as voice memo recorders, and as voice message recorders in portable telephone sets. Various types of digital voice recording and reproducing apparatuses have been developed and practically used. A DVR converts an analog signal representing a voice to a digital signal and records the digital signal in a recording medium when the voice is recorded, and converts the digital signal to an analog signal when the voice is reproduced. In the recording mode, the digital voice system first produces a stream of digital data which represents the audio message signal; this stream of digital data is then recorded on a digital memory. When the digital signal is stored in the storage medium, the digital recorder generally applies a coding technique to compress the volume of data. |

Remote control devices are widely used with automotive vehicles for a variety of purposes, such as to arm/disarm security systems, to lock/unlock doors, and to unlatch the hood and/or trunk. Most vehicles are equipped with remote keyless entry (RKE) controllers to permit a user to remotely lock and unlock the vehicle doors using a handheld transmitter. A typical remote control device communicates encoded radio frequency (RF) signals to a processing unit disposed within the vehicle to command the execution of different functions within the vehicle. A remote keyless entry transmitter is generally in the form of keyfob that hangs from a key ring. A vehicle anti-theft system utilizes a transponder embedded in a keyhead portion of a key and a receiver located at the ignition lock. |

A remote control is used to wirelessly control consumer electronic devices and home electrical appliances, such as air conditioners, televisions, stereo radios, digital video disk players, video cassette recorders, set-top cable television boxes and set-top satellite boxes. Universal remote controls can be programmed to control one or more electronic devices and can replace one or more source remote control. Universal remote control units include a memory that stores signal formatting data of different manufacturers which identify the signal structure to which specific manufacturer and model number devices are responsive. Remote control devices commonly use infrared or radio frequency wireless data transmission. These remote control devices have an integrated power source such as batteries. |

MP3 players are portable audio players that store, organize and play digital music files using MPEG layer 3. MP3 format is a compression system for digital music that helps reduce the size of a digitized song without degrading the sound quality. The MPEG format provides an effective mechanism for efficiently compressing and decompressing digital video and/or audio signals and for supplying the decompressed signals to a playback mechanism for viewing. An MP3 player manages digital contents in a memory in the form of a file and has a processor for controlling internal operations. An MP3 player retrieves compressed audio data from the disk and stores it in an internal memory buffer. Portable MP3 players rely on batteries for their portability and are provided with a headset for user listening. |

Alarm clocks are widely used to awaken individuals at a user set time. Alarm clock activate an audible signal at a selected time and until the signal is stopped by activation of a switch. Various types of alarm clocks are known. They include analog alarm clocks with hands to indicate the current time and digital clocks with digits to display the current time. A clock radio is a combination of a clock and a radio interconnected so that the radio is switched on at a predetermined time according to the clock. Most modem alarm clocks have a snooze button that allows one to temporarily turn off the alarm for a short period of time. Alarm clocks are provided with various types of deactivation mechanisms and devices for enabling a user to shut off the alarm after it has become activated. |

A digital video disk (DVD), also known as digital versatile disk, is a type of optical data storage disk that utilizes a low power laser to read data from the disk. The DVD format can be used for video, data storage, audio applications, and interactive videos, games, etc. A DVD player is a device for playing discs produced under the DVD video standard. A digital versatile disc player generally consists of three logical units, as defined in the DVD specification. The DVD players are connected to image reproduction systems functioning also as sound reproduction systems, such as televisions. Portable DVD players include a battery for providing power to the disc drive as well as other electronic components of the system. The displays used in portable DVD palyers are generally LCD and OLED displays. |

An electronic dictionary is a machine readable dictionary for retrieval of information, e.g. definitions, translations, pronunciations, which is displayed on a screen of a displaying device. In an electronic dictionary, a string of a word to be retrieved is input by a keyboard, and a result of retrieval is displayed on a screen of a displaying device. Language translation methods have evolved over the years and vary from traditional human translation to machine translation to machine translation with a human translation component. Machine translation is a kind of automatic translation from one language into another without human aid. An electronic dictionary uses a dictionary memory storing vocabulary data which consists of multiple blocks of word data representative of words of a language. |
