Optical spectrum analyzers or spectrometers are used for analyzing the output light beams from lasers, light-emitting diodes and other light sources. Optical spectrum analyzers are particularly useful for analyzing light sources in fiber optic systems which are used for high-bandwidth, high-speed voice, video, and data communications. Optical spectrum analyzers typically comprise a tunable filter that bandpass filters an input signal. A detector is used to measure the filtered signal and thereby determine the optical power within the filter's current pass band. Optical spectrum analyzers frequently use a diffraction grating for separating the light beam to be analyzed into its component wavelengths. Spectrum analyzers can be classified into non-real time and real time type spectrum analyzers. |

Traffic lights are used to control traffic along roadways and intersections. The function of traffic signal lights is to project a beam of light at specific angles through an aperture of predetermined cross sectional area. Traditionally, traffic lights have used incandescent light bulbs to produce light. A colored filter was installed in front of each bulb for giving one of the three traffic lights common colors. Incandescent lights have drawbacks in that the bulbs power consumption is high, thus increasing the operation costs, the bulb lifetime is short and decreases with environmental conditions. An alternative to incandescent traffic signals are lights which use light emitting diodes. The primary advantages are that an LED traffic light is much more efficient than an incandescent bulb and requires little or no maintenance. |

The use of digital cameras has exploded in recent years. A digital camera varies from a film camera in that instead of taking pictures on film that must be developed, it takes pictures that are saved as image files within the camera. A digital image photographed by a digital camera is generally recorded in a recording medium such as a detachable memory card and a magnetic disk. If an image is output through use of a printer, a photograph can be printed without development of a film. Many different types of digitally controlled printing systems have been invented. These printing systems use a variety of actuation mechanisms, a variety of marking materials, and a variety of recording media. Examples of digital printing systems include laser printers, thermal paper printers, and inkjet printers. |

Accelerometers are sensors or transducers that measure acceleration. A typical accelerometer utilizes a proof mass, a spring joining the proof mass to a stationary housing or substrate, and a sensor to measure displacement of the proof mass. Accelerometers are now being manufactured with micro-electromechanical systems, which integrate mechanical elements, sensors and electronics on a common silicon substrate. MEMS accelerometers typically consist of a pendulous proof mass, a suspension system and a method for determining the relative motion of the proof mass under the influence of acceleration. Accelerometers find use in automobile suspension systems, vehicle air bag systems, vibrometers, computer hard disc drivers, and machine vibration monitors. |

High voltage cables are used to transmit substantial quantities of electrical power either above ground or underground. These power cables have essentially the same cable configurations, consisting of the conductor, strand shield, insulation, insulation shield system and jacket. A high voltage cable generally comprises a central copper conductor having a diameter which may vary from a few millimeters to a few centimeters. Around the conductor an internal semiconductive layer is present which consists of a polythene insulation sheath. Around this insulation sheath there is provided an external semiconductor screen of usually the same composition as the internal layer. The purpose of semiconductor layers is to influence the electric field strength within the insulation layer. |

Batteries are used to power portable electronic equipment such as digital cameras, camcorders, personal digital assistant (PDA), MP3 players, cellular phones and laptop computers. The battery is electrically connected to the electronic circuitry of the portable electronic device by way of a battery connector. The rechargeable batteries have contact faces which engage with resilient contact elements of battery connectors in the electrical or electronic appliances when the batteries are inserted in the electrical or electronic appliances. Many types of electrical connectors have been developed for interconnecting the terminals of batteries. A battery connector comprises an insulative housing, a plurality of conductive terminals assembled on the insulative housing and soldered to a circuit board. |

A virtual private network (VPN) is an extension of a private intranet network across a public network, such as the Internet, creating a secure private connection. A virtual private network makes use of the public telecommunications infrastructure, maintaining privacy through the use of a tunneling protocol and security procedure. The virtual private network is implemented by communicatively coupling a plurality of routers, switches, gateways, and firewalls in one or more local area networks, or wide area networks. To make communication between computers private, virtual private networks use security methods, such as encryption, to maintain privacy. Tunnels are virtual point-to-point connections that offer authentication, encryption, and access control between tunnel endpoints. |
