Laser printer
Saturday, 19 August 2006
Laser printer uses a mechanism similar to that of a photocopy machine. The image is written on a photosensitive drum by a laser in the case of a laser printer. Laser printers typically offer a greater improvement in resolution over dot matrix and ink jet-type printers. Laser printers print images by drawing an electrostatic image on a photosensitive drum with laser beams and depositing a toner on a portion charged with a static electricity. Monochrome laser printers use a single laser scanning unit (LSU) and a single organic photoconductive cell (OPC) drum. Color laser printers employ four printing stations, one each for black, magenta, cyan and yellow toners. Laser printers are used in a wide variety of applications, from office printing, to medical printing, to bar code printing. Laser printers generally utilize replaceable toner cartridges.

Computer firewall protection
Saturday, 19 August 2006
A firewall serves as a security enclosure around a private local area network (LAN) of computers and associated peripherals. Firewalls shield data and resources from the potential ravages of computer network intruders. Firewalls typically incorporate hardware and software to prevent an outside user from gaining unfettered access to internal assets. The firewall is a specially configured computer that can interrupt the flow of communications between two or more computers. Firewalls can be implemented in routers, special firewall appliances, and bastion hosts at the connection point of two or more computer networks. Personal firewalls are a software application running on a personal computer. Packet filtering is the action a firewall takes to selectively control the flow of data to and from a network.

KVM switch
Friday, 18 August 2006
A KVM (keyboard, video monitor and mouse) switching system is used for selectively interconnecting a single workstation with a plurality of remotely located computers. The KVM switch enables a computer interface to be located at a greater distance from the computer than is typically possible with a standard interface. KVM switches are typically based on packet-based internet protocol (IP) networks. KVM switches allow a single video display, character input device, and pointing device to communicate with one or more rack-mounted computers, and provide the user with the ability to access between multiple computers using a single keyboard, video and mouse. The crosspoint switch routes the keyboard/mouse packet to another interface unit coupled to the selected remote computer.

Power transformer
Friday, 18 August 2006
Transformers are utilized to step electrical voltages up or down, to couple signal energy from one stage to another, and to match the impedances of interconnected electrical or electronic components. Transformers transfer electric energy from one circuit to another circuit through magnetic induction. A transformer ordinarily consists of wire windings around a ferromagnetic core. There are two types of transformers used to convey electricity from a transmission system to a distribution system. Power transformers provide rated voltage and current to electric and electronic devices while isolating those devices from the AC current mains. Distribution transformers are installed in the distribution network to lower the voltage to levels conveyed to commercial buildings, households, and other end users.

Data processors
Friday, 18 August 2006
Data processors are utilized for data processing in various devices such as personal computers and portable electronics. Data processors have significantly developed over the last two decades and are now widely used in every facet of digital signal processing (DSP). Microprocessors can be grouped into two general classes, general purpose microprocessors and special purpose microprocessors. A data processing system generally comprises a central processing unit, a program RAM (random access memory) which stores programs and a data RAM which stores data to be processed, and an input-output unit. In a data processor, pipeline processing is frequently employed for improving the performance. Data processing systems typically incorporate memory caches to improve system performance.

Data acquisition systems
Thursday, 17 August 2006
Data acquisition is the process of extracting, transforming, and transporting data from the source systems and external data sources to the host processing system to be displayed, analyzed, and stored. Data acquisition systems (DAQ) are used to perform a variety of functions, including laboratory research, process monitoring and control, data logging, analytical chemistry, tests and analysis of physical phenomena, and control of mechanical or electrical machinery. In data acquisition systems, information about a plurality of parameters is often obtained by simultaneously deploying numerous sensors. Data acquisition systems include sensors, transducers, and amplifiers. Data acquisition systems and methods may be used in a variety of applications.

Personal digital assistant (PDA)
Wednesday, 16 August 2006
A personal digital assistant (PDA) is a palm-sized computer that works as a digital personal assistant. Personal digital assistants can be used to store, display, and/or manipulate various personal information. PDAs can be used for sending and retrieving e-mail, web browsing, and data-sharing applications over the Internet, intranet or corporate networks. Personal digital assistant has become the most popular apparatus with the majority of consumers because of its small size, multi-function data processing, large storing capacity, etc. Personal digital assistants are adapted to perform a variety of functions including organizing, computing, paging, internet browsing, cellular communication and even global positioning. Personal digital assistants are popular both as portable computers and as wireless communication devices.
