Solid state laser
Saturday, 07 October 2006
A laser is device that produces a monochromatic, coherent light beam through the stimulated emission of photons from atoms, molecules, or ions of an active gain material. A solid-state laser uses a solid-state laser gain medium which converts energy from an optical pump source to a coherent output laser beam. Laser diodes have been recognized as providing an efficient pump source in solid-state laser systems. When employed as a pump source, the laser diode is used to generate light which overlaps the spectral band of the laser medium.  Diode-pumped solid-state laser typically includes a rare earth doped solid-state gain medium pumped by optical radiation from a laser diode. Diode pumped lasers involve semiconductor diodes which laser when excited by electrical current.

Analog to digital converter
Saturday, 07 October 2006
An analog to digital converter (ADC) converts an analog input signal into a digital output represented by a coded array of binary bits. An analog-to-digital converter provides a digital bit stream output of either single or multiple digital bits that are representative of an analog input signal. Analog to digital converters allow the use of sophisticated digital signal processing systems to process analog signals. An analog to digital converter may be implemented utilizing sigma-delta technology, mash converter technology, successive approximation technology, flash converter technology. Flash ADC is performed by a highly parallel comparison of an input analog signal to each of a set of reference voltages. Pipelined A/D converters have high accuracy, high throughput rates, and low power consumption.

Light fixtures
Friday, 06 October 2006
Lighting fixtures provide for controlled lighting of a subject in a wide variety of situations. There are many types of light fixtures. These include recessed fixtures, surface mounted fixtures, track-light fixtures and the like. They may utilize incandescent lamps, fluorescent lamps, metal halide lamps and others. Lighting fixtures generally can be grouped into two different categories, an indirect lighting fixture and a direct lighting fixture. Indirect lighting is widely recognized as the best type of lighting as it provides even illumination without the glare of direct illumination from the light source. Fluorescent light fixtures, sometimes termed "luminaires", are widely used in industrial, commercial, retail, institutional and office applications. Overhead lighting is often used in commercial and residential environments.

Photo printer
Friday, 06 October 2006
A photo printer is specifically designed to print high quality digital photos on photo paper. With the rapid development of digital technology, image-capturing devices, such as mobile phones and digital cameras, have become increasingly popular. A photo printer includes a print processing section for performing the same operations as conventional printers, and a photo image processing section for processing image data read from the memory card. Thermal printers are used in computer systems to print digital images. A thermal printer is used with sheets of thermosensitive recording material. Ink-jet printers are popular and cost-effective devices for producing color images. Some photo printers are provided with an image data processing function and can print without connecting to a computer.

Temperature sensor
Friday, 06 October 2006
The sensing of temperature is one of the fundamental requirements in almost every application. Various types of temperature sensors are known including thermometers, resistance temperature detectors, thermocouples, and radiometers. Typical integrated circuit (IC) solutions for sensing temperature change use a semiconductor temperature sensor. Temperature sensors are utilized in a wide variety of applications in which it is necessary to monitor the temperature within a space. Computer systems rely on temperature sensors located in the proximity of the processor package to provide temperature information for thermal control. Temperature sensors are used to monitor a variety of automotive systems, including for example coolant temperature and exhaust gas temperature.

Surveillance camera
Thursday, 05 October 2006
Video cameras come in many forms and sizes and can be used for a variety of purposes. Video surveillance is one of the most reliable and most common methods for maintaining security in government and industry. A typical surveillance video is directed at a location in order to protect the objects in the location from being stolen, to guard against intruders. In security applications several video cameras will be connected to a recording system that periodically records a short period of video from each camera. A video surveillance camera system typically includes a video camera with a pan and tilt mechanism and a display monitor with an operation terminal for controlling the video camera and the pan and tilt mechanism. Remote and locally located cameras typically include devices for camera control.

Field emission display (FED)
Thursday, 05 October 2006
Field emission display (FED) devices are an alternative to cathode ray tube (CRT) and liquid crystal display (LCD) devices. A field emission display includes a cathode plate containing an electron emitting surface (emission tip) that when driven, emits electrons toward a thin glass faceplate or anode plate coated with patterned phosphor. A FED has a structure in which a cathode where an electron emission source is formed so as to emit electrons on a substrate, and a gate electron for inducing field emission are formed in an array. Field emission devices may be used in making flat panel display devices for providing visual display for computers, telecommunication and other graphics applications. Flat panel displays have a greatly reduced thickness compared to the generally bulky cathode ray tubes.
