Radiation detectors are used in medicine, industry, and research to obtain structural information. Radioactive materials are unstable and emit radiation in the form of alpha, beta, gamma, or X-rays. Many different types of radiation detectors have been designed and manufactured to produce data corresponding to radioactive materials. Radiation detectors can be used to detect abnormalities by measuring temperature change and heat loss or gain. Radiation detectors have been used as a non-contact alternative to many temperature sensors. A radiation detector typically converts the radiation to visible light, which may then be converted further to an electrical signal and appropriately processed to yield the desired information. A radiation detector generall consists of a scintillator for receiving gamma rays emitted from a subject to emit light, and a photoelectron multiplier for converting the light emitted from the scintillator into an electrical pulse signal. Semiconductor radiation detectors generally operate by absorbing a quantum of gamma-ray or x-ray radiation and by converting the radiation energy into a number of electron-hole pairs that is proportional to the absorbed energy. Semiconductor radiation detectors are used in a wide variety of applications, including medical diagnostic imaging, nuclear waste monitoring, industrial process monitoring, and space astronomy. Radiation detectors are widely used in the medical field for X-ray examinations, and serve to form radiation images of an object to be examined in the context of mostly a medical examination or therapy.
