Fire detector systems are finding increasing use for the protection of human life and of valuables. Facilities faced with a constant threat of fire, such as semiconductor fabrication plants, paint facilities, petrochemical facilities and refineries, co-generation plants, aircraft hangers, gas turbines and power plants, gas compressor stations, silane gas storage facilities, munitions plants, and airbag manufacturing plants typically require constant monitoring and response to fires and potential fire hazard situations. The fire detectors generally work by flame sensing, temperature sensing, or smoke particle sensing. A fire detector comprises a body in which are received fire detecting means to detect the appearance of a fire and electrical circuits to convert the output of the fire detecting means into electrical signals, and control and indicating equipment connected to the detectors via communication means. Fire detectors are most commonly attached to inner surfaces of buildings such as walls and ceilings. Since smoke and hot air rise the devices are preferably matched to the ceiling. Various types of fire detectors are known. Threre are thermal type detectors, ionization type detectors, photoelectric type detectors, light obscuration type detectors, and radiation type (flame) detectors. The photoelectric detector responds to changes in light transmission through a medium that contains smoke. Light emitted from the light emission section and then scattered or attenuated due to smoke stemming from a fire is received by a light reception section, converted into an electric signal, and sampled as a smoke detection signal proportional to the concentration of the smoke. The ionization smoke detector responds to changes in the conductivity of an ionized medium due to the presence of combustion products. Ionization smoke detectors are capable of detecting a fire at a sufficiently early stage to allow timely deployment of suitable fire-fighting means, especially for the protection of human life. Such systems may be designated as early-warning systems. Infrared (IR) detectors have basically two forms: active and passive. Passive IR detectors generally employ a group of radiation sensors coupled through amplifiers to a logic circuit. The radiation sensors detect changes in ambient infrared radiation. Active IR detectors include a radiation source and an IR sensor which is sensitive to interruptions in the radiation sensed from the source.
