Portable wireless data terminals allow the transmission to remote locations of local data as well as the reception and display of remote data by using wireless modems. Wireless modems enable mobile computer devices to communicate with other computer devices without requiring physical access to a land line communication port. Many portable computing devices incorporate a wireless modem for data communication. A wireless modem is similar to a wired modem in that it permits a computer or other device to send and receive data from external sources. A wireless modem uses wireless communication channels to replace a more traditional wired connection through a telephone or a cable line. Wireless modems generally modulate an RF carrier with a stream of data packets, then amplify the modulated carrier for transmission from an internal antenna. When data transmission proceeds in a wireless network, the wireless modem is widely used to transmit the data. The wireless modem processes data and signals for transferring data between the wireless interface and the user interface. The modem controls the operation of the user interface for receiving data from and providing data to a user. The wireless modem also controls the operation of the wireless interface for sending and receiving signals to and from a wireless terminal or base station. A wireless radio frequency modems typically include an RF front end or an RF head, a modulator/demodulator portion, a central processing unit (CPU) or processor, memory; and an interface. A wireless modem may be installed as an adapter card or in an adapter slot such as a PCMCIA slot. The radio portion consists of a transmitter and a receiver. The transmitter and receiver may share a common antenna via a duplexer.
