Manufacturers : Microelectronics : Semiconductors

A semiconductor is a substance whose electrical conductivity is intermediate between high-conductivity conductors and the low-conductivity insulators. The conductivity refers to a compound's ability to conduct electricity; compounds with greater conductivities are able to conduct greater amounts of electricity. Semiconductors' conductivity may be altered by the addition of certain foreign compounds known as dopants, and the addition of these foreign compounds to semiconductors is known as doping. Semiconductor devices are electronic components that exploit the electronic properties of semiconductor materials, which include silicon, germanium, gallium arsenide, indium phosphide, and mercury cadmium telluride. In recent years, semiconductor devices have replaced vacuum tubes in most applications. Electronics has come to be dominated by semiconductor devices, which are found in the discrete devices and integrated circuits of computers, calculators, televisions, VCRs, radios, telephones, mobile phones, answering machines, digital cameras, camcorders, and cars, among others. Semiconductor devices are suitable to design an analog circuit due to characteristics of a bipolar transistor, such as high load driving force, high speed, and low noise. Common semiconductor devices include avalanche diode, DIAC (diode for alternating current), diode (rectifier diode), gunn diode, IMPATT diode, laser diode, light-emitting diode (LED), photocell, PIN diode, schottky diode, solar cell, tunnel diode, charge-coupled device (CCD), microprocessor, random access memory (RAM), read-only memory (ROM), bipolar transistor, darlington transistor, field effect transistor, insulated gate bipolar transistor, silicon controlled rectifier, thyristor, unijunction transistor, and hall effect sensor (magnetic field sensor).
