computer hardware, electronic components, consumer electronics
A controller is generally a device used to control other processes or external devices. Microcontrollers are integrated circuits which incorporate a microprocessor core along with one or more support circuits on the same monolithic semiconductor substrate, and several elements associated with computer systems including a central processing unit (CPU), random access memory (RAM), read only memory (ROM), and peripherals. A microcontroller is an integrated circuit which incorporates a microprocessor core along with one or more support circuits on the same monolithic semiconductor substrate. A microcontroller is typically coupled to one or more external memory devices which store software programs consisting of instructions and data. During operation, the microcontroller fetches the instructions and data from the external memory devices and operates upon the data during instruction execution. Microcontrollers have a wide diversity of applications. More and more consumer and commercial products, such as telecommunications devices, automobiles, security systems, thermostats, and the like are being controlled by microcontrollers. Microcontrollers are used in modems for command interpretation and data transmission, in printer buffers for high speed dumping of data in preparation for driving the printer at the appropriate speed, and in copiers, cable television terminal equipment, lawn sprinkling controllers, credit card phone equipment, cellular phones, fax machines, automotive applications such as engine control modules, automobile suspension control, anti-lock braking systems, keyless entry systems, and a host of other industrial and consumer applications. Generally, a microcontroller is employed as the primary control chip in an electronic circuit embedded within a product other than a general purpose computer system.
