Halogen lamps have acquired increased acceptance and use because of their ability to produce a relatively intense light. Halogen incandescent lamps usually have a transparent bulb or vessel which is closed off to be vacuum-tight and within which one or more filaments of tungsten are retained. A tungsten halogen lamp comprises a tubular glass bulb, a molybdenum lead-in foil, a tungsten coil filament and halogen gas filled in the space of the bulb together with inert gas, such as argon. The molybdenum leading foil is embedded in a sealed end of the bulb. The tungsten coil filament is housed in the space of the bulb and electrically connected to the molybdenum lead-in foil. A halogen infrared (HIR) lamp uses an infrared (IR) reflective coating on an elliptical surface of a double ended quartz halogen lamp to preferentially reflect IR radiation to a filament. During the operation of a halogen lamp, an equilibrium is established between the formation and decay of tungsten halides from the tungsten vapor from the filament and the mixture of halogen and inert glass. The decay reaction thereby takes place at higher temperatures than the formation reaction, so that the tungsten is re-deposited on the filament. Halogen lamp bulbs are commonly used in situations wherein high levels of illumination are required, such as floodlighting a patio where a party or barbecue may be held. Halogen incandescent lamps are frequently used for illumination, usually in combination with reflectors. Such lamps may be coated with an infrared reflecting layer on the lamp bulb to decrease the power rating of the lamp, while still retaining high filament temperature.
