Toroidal transformers are are built around magnetic cores of toroidal shape with multiple windings threaded through the center hole of the core and distributed evenly along the circumference of the toroidal core. In toroidal power transformers, a primary winding (or set of primary windings) is first wound on a toroidal shaped core, covering nearly the entire circumference of the core. One or more secondary windings are then wound on top of the primary windings. with a high-voltage insulating layer separating the primary and secondary windings for forming a safety insulation layer capable of withstanding high-voltage insulation testing and high operating potential differences between the primary and secondary windings. Toroidal transformers include insulation layer in the form of arcuate (semi-toroidal) tubes which surround a portion of the core (and bobbin if used) of the transformer. This high-voltage insulating layer separates the primary and secondary windings for forming a safety insulation layer capable of withstanding high-voltage insulation testing and high operating potential differences between the primary and secondary windings.The core insulation is usually made by curing an insulating layer of plastic or ceramic material on the outer surface of the core, by fitting plastic caps on the top and bottom of the core, or by winding a narrow strip of plastic material in overlapping fashion through the center hole in the toroid. Toroidal transformers are compact and inherently quieter than standard core configured transformers. Toroidal magnetic cores are frequently used in electronics because of their compact size, tight coupling and low flux leakage characteristics.
