Circuit interrupters are electrically operated switches used for controlling motors and other types of electrical loads. Circuit interrupters include contactors, motor starters, motor controllers and other electromechanical switching devices. A contactor with an overload protection relay system is called a motor starter. The overload relay provides overload protection to the motor from overload conditions. Overload conditions occur when equipment is operated in an electrically undamaged circuit in excess of normal full-load rating, or when conductors carry current in excess of rated ampacity. There are various types of electric motor starters, such as a switching contactor, and a thermal relay. A manual motor starter is provided with a detecting section for detecting a fault current, a switching mechanism operated responding to a detection signal from the detecting section, a contact section interlocked with the operation of the switching mechanism to open or close a current path, and an arc extinguishing section for extinguishing an arc generated when contacts of the contact section are opened. The manual motor starter is also called a motor protection power-circuit breaker. Solid state motor starers control the stopping and staring of electrical motors by gated semiconductor devices such as SCRs or other thyristors. Electromagnetic contactors include a plurality of movable electrical contacts which are brought into contact with a plurality of fixed electrical contacts to close the contactor and connect a power line to the load.
