Junction boxes , also known as outlet boxes or terminal boxes, are used to install electrical components and wiring terminations so as to provide proper spacing between components, to provide environmental protection to the wiring terminations and components, and to prevent inadvertent contact with the wiring and components. Electrical junction boxes have been used since the advent of high speed data communications, telephone and facsimile communications, satellite television services, and cable television (CATV) services. Such junction boxes are particularly employed in routing cables, including CATV, voice communication, and other signal and data communication cables from a remote location, for instance an underground or overhead CATV service line, a satellite dish, or the like, and into individual buildings and residences. These boxes are generally mounted with the front side of the box positioned flush with the installed wall covering material and include fittings for attaching a wall plate, switches, plugs, connectors, and electrical/electronic devices to the box. The box also provides a means for connection of cables and conduits within the box or termination of cables to apparatus mounted within the box. Electrical junction boxes are generally manufactured and supplied to the trade in industry-standard sizes and configurations.
