Internet telephony is the use of the internet for conversion of analog speech signals used on current telephone systems into digital data, allowing calls to be sent over the Internet. The use of the Internet for telephone-like multimedia communication is becoming increasingly popular with increased home and office access to the internet. Internet telephony or IP telephony provides realtime delivery of voice and other data types between two or more parties across networks using internet protocols. IP telephony relies on end-to-end transport of information rather than the connections and circuits of the traditional switched telephone system. In internet telephony system, a VoIP (voice over internet protocol) technology is used for integrating the voice communications with data communications. A VoIP system enables the transmission of telephone calls over an IP data network such as the Internet. The call data is transported end-to-end across the internet without setting up dedicated circuits and connections. Information is transported across the internet in packets which travel the IP network, passing through routers, computers that operate like switches by reading the addresses on each packet and assigning them to appropriate transmission lines, and converts the packets back into a voice transmission signal.
