A multiplexer is an electronic device that allows two or more signals to be transmitted simultaneously on a single communication channel. Multiplexers are used to combine a plurality of channels, each centered at a different frequency, into one combined signal. Computer disk drives and other applications commonly use multiplexers. Microprocessors and digital signal processors may include one or more multiplexers. Multiplexers are typically used in communication systems to multiplex lower rate data signals onto a higher rate channel. Data multiplexers in the telecommunications field are used to combine several asynchronous data communication signals from individual data terminal equipment (DTE) sources such as computer terminals or personal computers onto a single composite link. Optical multiplexing and demultiplexing is an important function in optical communications systems. Multiplexing and demultiplexing are typically performed within optical communications systems by array waveguide gratings (AWGs). Optical multiplexers are used in spectroscopic analysis equipment and for the combination or separation of optical signals in wavelength division multiplexed fiber-optic telecommunications systems. Conventional multiplexers are typically designed utilizing a combination of transistors from within the family of metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistor (MOSFETs). To meet the increasing demand for information transmission capacity, multiple wavelength transmission is required. Dense wavelength division multiplexers (DWDMs) are used in optical systems for functions of combining or separating optical signals with densely packed wavelengths.
