The performance of a computer may be enhanced by the use of expansion modules. The broad use of laptops or notebooks, and personal digital assistants (PDAs) has been severely hampered by limited capabilities for expansion or customization. A computer systems include a motherboard for mounting at least one microprocessor and other application specific integrated circuits, such as memory controllers, and input/output (I/O) controllers. Most computer motherboards include slots for additional adapter cards to provide additional function to the computer system. Typical functions that a user might add to a computer include additional microprocessors, additional memory, fax/modem capability, sound cards, and graphics cards. Known expansion modules include memory expansion cards such as DRAM, SRAM, ROM, and flash technologies, as well as I/O expansion modules such as dedicated peripherals, networking, modems, wireless communications, serial I/O, and barcode and other scanners. The computer will typically receive and accommodate the expansion module in one or more available expansion slots. Desktop computers typically have expansion slots located within the main casing of the computer.
