A laptop or notebook computer is a small, lightweight, portable, battery-powered, laptop personal computer (PC) designed and developed to meet the needs of portability while still maintaining productivity. Laptop computers are very popular information products today as they are light, compact, and convenient to carry around and may store voluminous information. Recent increases in processor speed and decreases in memory cost, memory size and processor power consumption have allowed portable computers to operate at increased performance levels. Laptop computers generally have two main parts, a display screen housing hinged to a keyboard housing. The display housing is rotatably hinged to the main housing, it contains a liquid crystal display (LCD) display or other thin and lightweight display screens. A keyboard, motherboard, memory, disk drives, cursor control and switches often are mounted within the keyboard housing. Additional features include input/output ports and various interface connections for enabling the computer to be elecrically coupled to other devices (such as digital cameras, camcorders, web cameras, microphones, mouse, printer, scanner) and communication links (e.g., telephone lines). Loudspeakers and sound cards also may be included for multimedia applications. Laptop computers generally operate from either external or portable power sources such as laptop batteries.
