The military industry has a need for reliable, portable cable and connector systems for carrying electric power to remote locations. Electrical connectors which protect electrical circuits from electro-magnetic interference (EMI) and transient signals such as electromagnetic pulses (EMP), lightening and other voltages having pulses of extremely short duration and high amplitudes have become increasingly indispensable in military and aerospace applications. The size and signal carrying ability of a coaxial connector often is quantified by standards developed for the military. Military specifications define dimensional and performance standards for a sub-miniature series A connector. Connectors that meet this standard have many non-military applications and are identified commercially as SMA coaxial connectors. In military and aerospace applications, shielded cable, such as cable in accordance with the M27500 cable specification, is used. Shielded cable includes a plurality of conductive shields surrounding one or more conductors in the cable. The shields protect the signals transmitted along the conductors from electromagnetic interference (EMI) due to electromagnetic radiation in the ambient atmosphere. The shields must be grounded to protect the conductors from EMI. The military connector for shielded cable includes a conductive backshell that grounds the shields when the connector is plugged into a receptacle.
