A hearing aid apparatus is intended for sound transmission  through a microphone, which then converts the sound waves to electrical signals. It amplifies sound and requires the presence of hair cells for effectiveness. Hearing aids are distinguished by where they are worn: in the ear (ITE), in the canal (ITC), completely in the canal (CIC), behind the ear (BTE), or on the body. In-the-ear hearing aids fit completely in the outer ear and are used for mild to severe hearing loss. Behind-the-ear hearing aids are worn behind the ear and are connected to a plastic earmold that fits inside the outer ear. A completely-in-canal hearing aid is largely concealed in the ear canal and is used for mild to moderately severe hearing loss. Modern hearing aids comprise an earmold having therein the necessary electronics for amplifying and otherwise conditioning sound to compensate for a user's hearing loss. Such electronics generally include a microphone for receiving the sound and converting the sound to an electrical signal, an electronic circuit for amplifying and processing the signal produced by the microphone, a speaker (also known as a receiver) for converting the processed signals into sound energy and a battery for providing operational power to the hearing aid. Recently wireless hearing aids become popular. It works by transmitting sound by one hearing aid to the other side so that pressing one aid's program button simultaneously changes the other aid and both aids change background settings simultaneously. FM receiving hearing aids are also now emerging with inbuilt wireless receivers.
